Vegan shredded tofu tacos are one of those dishes that instantly change how you feel about tofu. Instead of cubes or crumbles, the tofu is shredded, creating strands that soak up the taco spices beautifully and mimic the tender texture of minced meat. The result is tacos that are juicy, flavourful, and incredibly satisfying, all while staying completely plant-based.

Substitutes
What makes vegan tacos especially appealing is how customisable they are. Use what you have at home for toppings to your tacos. Prefer soft tacos over hard taco shells, great use them? This is a dish that once you have the basics, the tofu and the taco spice, it is entirely up to you how you want to finish it.

Freezable
Shredded tofu freezes so much better than a full square of tofu. Partly because most of the liquid have been expelled when cooking, but also the smaller pieces makes for less space for the liquid to cling on to. This will give a much better texture when defrosted. If you have the space in your freezer, freeze the tofu taco flat and put into freezer bags once it is frozen solid. This makes it easier to take out just as much as you need for your next taco night.


Batch cooking tips
For larger event or simply if you want to make a batch and have in the freezer too, bake your tofu in the oven. Follow the steps in the recipe card but instead of frying it on the stove top, stick the shredded tofu in the oven for twenty minutes, stir after half the time and you can make so much more at the same time without being stuck at the stove.

Vegan shredded tofu tacos
Ingredients
- 400 g firm tofu pressed
- Oil to fry
Taco spice
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp chili
- 2 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp sugar
- Use about 3 tbsp taco spicemix
Instructions
Tofu
- Press the tofu between paper towels, until excess water is squeezed out.
- Shred the tofu on the large side of your cheese shredder.
Taco spice mix
- Add all the spices in a bowl and mix together. Store in an airtight container or use right away.
- Tofu tacos
- Add oil to a pan and add the shredded tofu.
- Add taco seasoning to the tofu and stir so that the spices cover all the tofu.
- Fry until tofu has a crisp surface.
- Serve ith your favourite taco ingredients.
