It’s summer! That means barbecues and potlucks. If you have a bunch of people coming over, or you simply do not have the outdoor space for a barbecue then this barbecue hamburger recipe is for you. Stick them in the oven and dinner is prepared.

Make the hamburgers extra flavourful by using my homemade barbecue sauce. The addition of the barbecue sauce to the mince meat before cooking the hamburgers really lift these burgers. It makes the burgers more moist.

If you want even more of the delicious barbecue flavours, make sure that you add a dollop of the sauce between your meat and the hamburger bun when you dress your hamburger.

Cooking hamburgers in the oven

These burgers cooks just as well in a frying pan as in the oven or on the grill. To cook them in the oven, gives the advantage of being able to cook many at the same time and you don’t have to stand around and wait for them to be done. Once in the oven, they sort themselves out, you can even skip the step of turning them over once.

Toppings

When I make these burgers I like to add in some salad, tomatoes and fresh cucumbers. I know people will swear by pickles, but unless I eat hamburgers out, I don’t like to put pickled cucumbers on my burgers, I prefer a fresh, crispy cucumber.

And of course the cheese. Always cheese, preferably a thick slice of it, and letting it melt into hamburger.

Often I add in some pickled red onions too, made easy by always having a jar of them in the fridge.

Which buns to use

Using brioche buns with my hamburgers always makes them feel a bit more fancy and special. Brioche buns are more fluffy and has a bit more flavour than regular white buns. But of course you can use regular hamburger buns or even make your own. Do what suits your best, it is the hamburger patty that is the star of this show.

Freezable

These hamburgers are so easy to freeze, you can either freeze them raw and take out as needed. Or if you prefer to have them ready to eat, bake them in the oven, freeze and then toss them in a pan, or on the grill for a quick carmelisation of the meat before adding them to a toasted bun and your toppings.

Variations

There are several variations of hamburgers in my repertoire, all to make barbecue days a bit different. It is not only the topping you can vary but also what you put in the mince meat to make different flavoured hamburgers. Why not try my Asian inspired hamburgers.

Keyword: barbecue, hamburger
Servings: 4 portions

Ingredients

  • 400 g mince beef or turkey
  • 4 tbsp barbecue sauce
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • 4 Brioche Buns

Home made barbecue sauce

  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tbs oil
  • 100 ml ketchup
  • 1 ½ tbsp vinegar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar lightly packed
  • 100 ml room temperature water
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • ½ tsp chili powder

Optional extra toppings per hamburger:

  • 2 slices crispy bacon
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 slices tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp BBQ sauce

Instructions

  • Take out the mince ahead of time to bring it to room temperature.
  • If making your own barbecue sauce, do this now so it has time to cool down a bit
  • Set your oven to 200 degrees Celsius (390F)
  • Mix the mince with the barbecue sauce, smoked paprika and salt.
  • Make 4 patties out of the mince mixture, 100g each.
  • Put the patties on a parchment paper and a cookie sheet.
  • Cook for 10 minutes, turn patties after five minutes (not absolutely necessary if you’re short on time or have a big batch of hamburgers to make).
  • If you prefer a grilled texture, put under broil for an additional two minutes.
  • Roast the brioche buns in a dry frying pan until golden.
  • Dress the hamburgers on the brioche buns with the optional extras your prefer.
  • Serve with potato wedges and spicy coleslaw or a green salad.

Barbecue sauce

  • Mince garlic and fry in a pot for a few minutes in the oil until fragrant.
  • Mixed the rest of the ingredients and add to the pot.
  • Cook for ten minutes on low heat, don’t let it boil. Whisk occasionally.
  • Take off heat and let cool off for a bit before adding it to your dish or serve it as a dipping sauce.

Notes

To make a smooth barbecue sauce, pour it through a sieve after it has cooked together and cooling down, to catch the small bits of garlic.
